Boiler installation in Rainworth

Rainworth was built for Rufford Colliery and the housing stock still divides along that history. The 1920s and 1930s properties along Southwell Road and the streets behind it were built for solid fuel and converted to gas decades later, which is why we still take out back boilers here more often than in most of the villages we cover. The post-war housing off Warsop Lane runs open-vented systems with a cylinder and loft tanks. Along Kirklington Road the later private housing is newer and simpler. Removing one is not a swap — it is a removal, an opening to make good, a new gas run to wherever the replacement is going, and a flue route that has to work with the frontage. We price all of that up front rather than discovering it.

• Flue routes onto a busy frontage

  Southwell Road carries the A617 through the village and the properties fronting it have little room between the wall and the pavement. Flue terminal positions have to clear boundaries and openings without discharging over a footway, which sometimes means the boiler goes somewhere other than the obvious place.

• Pipework that has been extended, not replaced

  Ninety years of conversions and additions leave systems that are a patchwork of pipe sizes and materials. Hanging a modern boiler on the end of that without checking flow rates is how you end up with radiators that never warm. We survey the existing pipework rather than assuming it is adequate.
