Boiler installation in Hucknall

Hucknall packs three quite different eras of housing into a small town, and the boiler job changes completely depending which one you are in. The inter-war semis along Watnall Road and Annesley Road are the classic open-vented conversion — cylinder, loft tanks, gravity hot water — and they take a combi beautifully.   Many of the town-centre terraces have no rear access at all, so the old appliance and the new one both come through the front door and down a narrow hall. It dictates the order of work and it dictates where the flue can terminate, since the only available external wall may face directly onto a neighbour. We survey the flue route before quoting rather than assuming a standard horizontal terminal will do.

• Gravity systems on Watnall Road

  The inter-war semis here typically have gravity-fed hot water and a pumped heating circuit, which is a bigger conversion than it looks. The cylinder and both loft tanks come out, the system is converted to sealed, and every radiator wants checking for sludge because open-vented systems corrode faster. Two days is realistic; one day is optimistic.

• Hard water and plate heat exchangers

  Severn Trent water through Hucknall is moderately hard, and it is the single most common reason a combi's hot water weakens after four or five years — scale on the plate heat exchanger. On new installations here we specify a scale reducer alongside the magnetic filter rather than treating it as an optional extra.
