  Mansfield is our home town and the base we work out from. That means shorter lead times, same-day surveys where we can, and engineers who already know the housing stock — from the Victorian terraces off Chesterfield Road South to the post-war estates on Ravensdale and the newer developments out towards Berry Hill.

  Rainworth is not so much an area we cover as the one we work from. Our office at Ransom Wood sits on the Mansfield side of the village, which makes this the shortest journey we make and the easiest place for us to get to at short notice. The housing is mostly colliery-era and post-war, built when Rufford was working, and the heating systems reflect it.

• Clipstone

  Clipstone is ten minutes from our office and unusually consistent in its housing. New Clipstone was built as a model colliery village in the 1920s, which means street after street of properties that were designed to the same handful of plans — and consequently present the same heating problems in the same places. Old Clipstone, a mile away, is an older and much more varied settlement.

• Mansfield Woodhouse

  Mansfield

  NG19

  Mansfield Woodhouse runs straight on from Mansfield itself but has an older centre of its own, and the difference shows in the work. Around the Market Place and Church Street there is stone-built property considerably older than most of what we see in the town, while the Park Hall and Debdale estates are conventional twentieth-century housing.

• Ravenshead

  Ravenshead is a different job from most of the places we cover. It was built largely as private housing from the 1960s onwards — big detached properties on generous plots, many with two bathrooms and a hot-water demand that a standard combi cannot meet. The right answer here is far more often a system boiler and an unvented cylinder than the combi swap that suits the terraces further north.

  Farnsfield sits between Rainworth and Southwell, close enough to our office that it is a routine journey rather than an outlying one. The village has an old core of stone and brick property around the church, later estates built out from it, and a scattering of farms and converted buildings in the surrounding countryside — three quite different heating problems within a couple of miles.

• Sutton-in-Ashfield

  Sutton-in-Ashfield is the largest town we cover after Mansfield itself, and the range of work reflects that. There is textile and colliery-era terraced housing near the centre, extensive post-war estates, and enough commercial property — the Idlewells centre, King's Mill Hospital and the surrounding trading estates — that a fair share of our Sutton work is not domestic at all.

• Kirkby-in-Ashfield

  Kirkby-in-Ashfield is ten minutes down the A38 from us and one of the areas we cover most frequently. The town's mix of tight terraced streets near Kirkby Cross and larger post-war estates off Kingsway means the right approach varies street by street — and access, parking and the gradients near The Summit all factor into how we plan a job.

• Hucknall

  Ashfield

  Hucknall sits between Mansfield and Nottingham and we are in the town most weeks. Its housing runs from pre-1930 terraces off High Street through inter-war and post-war semis on Butler's Hill and Ruffs Estate to the new-builds at Beardall Fields — three very different installation jobs, and we plan for which one we are walking into before we arrive.

• Selston & Brinsley

  Ashfield

  Selston, Brinsley, Underwood and Jacksdale sit in former mining country west of the M1, and the housing reflects it — tight pre-1919 miners' terraces in Bagthorpe and New Westwood alongside inter-war and post-war semis near the B600. The gradients along Cordy Lane and the narrow sections of Westwood Road mean access planning is not optional here.

• Worksop

  Worksop is at the northern edge of the area we work, half an hour up from Mansfield. It is a bigger and older town than the villages between, with a Victorian centre near the Priory, the former Manton colliery housing to the south east, and substantial modern estate development out at Gateford.

• Retford

  Retford is a market town with genuinely old fabric at its centre — Georgian and Victorian property around Cannon Square and the Market Place, conservation constraints that affect where a flue can terminate, and narrow historic approaches near Bridgegate. Beyond the centre it opens out into inter-war semis in Ordsall and post-war estates at Hallcroft and Thrumpton.

  Beeston's housing runs from late-Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the St John's Grove area to inter-war semis along the Wollaton Road corridor and modern apartments by Beeston Square. Add the NET tram running through Middle Street and the A6005 at peak times, and access planning matters here more than in most towns we cover.

• Clifton

  City of Nottingham

  Clifton is one of the largest housing estates in Europe, and the estate layout defines how we work here — cul-de-sacs with service alleys, 1950s and 60s semis with legacy systems, and the older fabric of Clifton Village around the Green. Add later infill at Silverdale and the tram running down Southchurch Drive, and no two streets need quite the same approach.

  Carlton sits on the eastern side of Nottingham in the Borough of Gedling, running up the hill from the Trent valley towards Mapperley. The gradients here are real, the Victorian terraces along Carlton Hill are tightly packed with on-street parking only, and the inter-war and post-war semis further out at Gedling and Netherfield bring a different set of jobs again.
